Recent strides in deep learning and computer vision have sparked considerable interest in leveraging these technologies for the automated analysis of surgical video data. While existing studies have predominantly focused on laparoscopic and robotic surgery, a noticeable gap exists in exploring the potential applications of video analysis in open surgery. This Ph.D. research endeavors to fill this void by pioneering novel algorithms tailored for analyzing both video and motion sensor data to evaluate surgical proficiency in open procedures.

As part of this work,  we developed cutting-edge algorithms for action segmentation and tool usage detection using video and motion data—crucial components for assessing surgical skills in open surgery. Our investigation extends to the complexities of online and offline action segmentation, with a keen focus on understanding the system's latency and its impact on real-time performance. Balancing performance with latency emerges as a pivotal consideration for the development of effective real-time systems.

Furthermore, this research introduces a groundbreaking approach—a novel video-based automatic simulator for open surgery. This simulator offers a comprehensive evaluation of a surgeon's skills in a manner that is easily interpretable. This simulator holds promise for home-based training scenarios, providing an accessible and effective platform for honing surgical expertise.
